“One feels the influence of nature in these otherwise completely abstract works…For Stickney-Gibson shadings of light and dark and juxtapositions of vivid against near monochromatic fields of black or white serve as staging grounds for the dramas of the heart and mind.” – Eleanor Heartney
Melinda Stickney-Gibson's paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations involve a diaristic, distinctly personal and often graphic approach incorportating small snippets of phrases from her own journals, fragments of writing by others, and simple evocative words such as "yes" "maybe" "no?" and "her". Her paintings employ a restricted palette of elemental colors whose surfaces are built up by gestural brushwork in subtle variations. Stickney-Gibson's sculptural work involves steel, glass, concrete and wire; resting on steel wall-mounted ledges or installed on the floor with an intense attention to the minute variations of detail all the while continuing the diaristic idea of personal mark-making and sense of place.
Melinda Stickney-Gibson maintains a home and studio in the Catskill Mountains of New York State after having spent many years living and working in New York City.
Stickney-Gibson has had over 25 solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions in the United States. In additions, she has curated Dialogues for Kouros Gallery, NY, NY (2009), Line for Butters Gallery, Portland OR (2012), co-curated DRAWING SOUND and TERRA for the Kleinert/James Art Center, Woodstock NY (2017) and most recently, SHELTER , an outdoor sculpture installation for the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, Woodstock NY (2022).
