Tower House Sanctuary
Overview
Hand-built by sculptor, designer, and circus person, John Kahn, the Tower House is a work of art as well as a home. From the curved walls to the arched doorways with custom woodwork and unique windows, the Tower House’s craftsmanship is unexpectedly magical and serves as a functional sculpture.
In 1993, artist John Kahn - an associate of Sesame Street's Jim Henson - started the construction of The Tower House. creating a functional sculpture that can be lived in. With round walls following the curves of the tower and a spiral staircase uniting 5 floors, the tower is topped by a wraparound porch with views of the Catskills. The Tower House is reminiscent of the architectural tower trend revived in the Catskills with the creation of Arts and Crafts- style viewing structures in Onteora Park, Tannersville NY. In this tradition of hand-crafted carpentry, every detail in the Tower House rejects prefabrication and embraces the artist's touch. Cabinet doors are skillfully rounded to accomodate the curved interiors, surfaces are hand tooled to create unique patterns and colorful paints brighten the woodwork. With a mixutre of rough, natural wood bannisters and polished architectural details, the melding between man-made and the natural world becomes blurred and the Tower House is a dream-like merger of both.
