Overview
Joe Diggs | In Venice

"Yet as I describe one painting, I know I’ve only described one planet within an entire system of swirling galaxies with undying suns, moons, and stars."

                       Seph Rodney

The solo exhibition, Joe Diggs | In Venice, explores the theme of the 61st Venice Biennale, In Minor Keys. Long known for his figurative paintings about his family and African-American community, Joe Diggs now delves into visual abstractions that merge into a spiritual memory of traditional woven surfaces. Smaller works, painted on fast-food containers and scribbled with poker game scores with “notes to self” scattered throughout, convert ordinary moments and materials into art. Seph Rodney observes about the complexity and variety of Joe Diggs' paintings: "Yet as I describe one painting, I know I’ve only described one planet within an entire system of swirling galaxies with undying suns, moons, and stars."

(VENICE, Italy) - This solo exhibition, Joe Diggs in Venice, explores the theme of the 61st Venice Biennale, In Minor Keys. Long known for his figurative paintings about his African-American family and Black culture, Joe Diggs is now delving into visual abstractions that merge into a spiritual memory of traditional woven surfaces.  Smaller works, painted on fast food containers scribbled with poker game scores and “notes to self” scattered throughout, convert ordinary moments and materials into art.

 ABOUT JOE DIGGS

Joseph (Joe) Diggs is a practicing artist, curator, and educator with generational roots on Cape Cod in the United States.  His paintings range from figurative depictions of African American history and personal family memories to gestural plein-air landscapes and geometric abstractions, and they span in scale from large, wall-sized murals to small, intimate works on cardboard.

Recent solo exhibitions include Provincetown Art Association & Museum and Berta Walker Gallery, Provincetown, MA (2025), Holderness School, Holderness, NH (2025), Brattleboro Museum, Brattleboro, VT (2018), and Cotuit Center for the Arts, Cotuit, MA (2009). In 2025,  Joe Diggs was honored as Artist of the Year by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. Although anchored in his local Cape Cod community, Diggs’ paintings are in many national and international private collections. Joe Diggs is represented by Berta Walker Gallery.
